What does the other side of belief mean? Can be the conflict of various things in which we believe with the SELF & other’s self.
For example (I would consider this as a belief because I believe it is so): a person can see a corporate as
1. A bunch of people who are self centered considering the fact that they are the cause for most of the social damages that happen
2. A group of intellects who help in the progress of every human’s life style
3. A place where you would get a good STARTING salary
4. ETC…..ETC ETC…..
There are various ways of seeing the same thing, which apparently doesn’t remain the same if it is viewed differently.
But the main thing which we should understand is “we need to understand other’s view of looking at the thing”.
If we don’t believe in something we tend to call the followers an IDIOT, failing to realize that we are the idiots refusing to RESPECT other’s view of the same thing.
Let me quote two examples from what I have experienced.
1) The Vinayak Chathurthi ritual: I and my friends met at the beach as we usually do, one of my friends brought a GANESHA idol to put it in the water and practice the belief. She asked me to put it in the water. I took it, casually, went near the shore and threw the idol in to the water, by general belief I wasn’t supposed to do that. When I was questioned on my action, I asked “when we are anyway putting the idol in to the water, how does it make a difference if I throw it?”
2) The second instance is again religious, sorry if had hurt anybody’s sentiments. This is about offering flowers to the deity. As a practice in my house, we offer flowers to the deity’s photo; our maid one day accidently swept previous day’s flowers with the broom, my mom got furious on her. But I had a doubt, as usual, if any way we are going to throw the used flowers along with the rubbish. What s wrong in using the broom??
When I gave it some thought, I was behaving idiotic; what s the problem if the idol was not thrown?? What if the flowers were not swept?? Is there something wrong in doing a thing in a better & cleaner way? Is it a flaw to give some extra respect?? Considering the fact that, respect is similar to education, THE MORE WE GIVE, THE MORE WE GET.
There are lots of things we believe and others won’t, there are a lot of times when we believe something is right, where others would say it’s not. There are a lot of times when we believe what we believe is not belief.
>WHAT EVER IT IS, I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT EVERY BELIEF SHOULD BE RESPECTED.
THE OTHER SIDE OF RESPECTING THE BELIEF should be a collateral mirror image.
THIS is MY PERSONAL BELIEF.
Interesting article.. But Vinod.. Both the instances that you have quoted.. Its not exactly belief. Atleast when it comes to most of us, it isn't. We grow up looking at the way things are done. Its more of a system. Like you wear uniform to school, remove slippers while entering the house, put clothes for washing separately etc. Its just the way things are done. A person grows up observing the way things are done and invariably that becomes right according to them. That does not convey what a person believes in.
ReplyDeletei second ur comment preetha.... u r absolutely right....
ReplyDeletean italian is me da SGK... don be confused...:)

ReplyDeletetrue, I RESPECT YOUR(preetha and Italian) SIDE OF THE BELIEF..but i am talking about the root of all the sanctities, BELIEF.
ReplyDeleteas SG said sanctity is basic respect we give to religiously related THINGS ((http://www.thefreedictionary.com/sanctity)), but i believe religion is it self a belief, very strong belief. just to avoid controversy sanctity and belief were given different words in languages...
that was the respect given to people who get confused between sanctity and belief.
MAY BE ONE OF THE OTHER SIDES OF BELIEF IS SANCTITY.
its the system we grow up in... as preetha put it rightly... things the society makes us follow from when we were very young becomes a habit subconsciously... so don confuse it wit belief... little thread of difference... or maybe a broader thread i dunno...
ReplyDeleteno sanctity does not refer to the respect... i put it wrongly an deleted the comment as a consequence... as it had nothin to do with the article in the first place... sanctity actually refers to the purity of a thing..(which predominately is religious..)... so no connection bet the blog an the comment...:)
ReplyDelete@vinod: as i said before... its a habit... even if u don believe in somethin.. u do it outta habit... cos thats the way u grew up... observin wat people arnd u say.. say for example... u put vibhuthi on ur forehead say daily...(i think u do it daily vin...)... an accordin to ur comment an more "scientifically" vibhuthi is nothin but ash... don u put it on ur forehead believin in t... accordin to u (most of us here..)we don c it as ash... cos thats wat our fathers n grandfathers(in short the society we grow up in..)tells u its pure... an u follow it with blind faith... wy don u question that... we can argue for argument sake...
ReplyDeletetrue .. very true.. i do put the vibuthi almost daily.. my argument here is the vibuthi got it's respect only when we(dad & dad's dad) believed its not jus ash.
ReplyDeletethe other side of ash is VIBUTHI.
@ all: please do not delete your posts, as there can be references made respect to that. and with out the root post, the following comments may seem to be on the other side.
that is wat m also sayin... u say it vibuthi not ash cos that wat u were taught to tell or believe when u were young... u do it witout questionin an that has slowly becum a habit... this is wat i meant earlier that its the society u grow up in... things that u observe an believe from an old age cannot be changed... cos that i believe is the root of wat we are...this was what preetha was sayin earlier too an technically the other side of ash is ash...
ReplyDeletei think both of us are putting forth the same ideas in different ways.. kudos..
ReplyDeleteTHE OTHER SIDE OF A CORRECT STATEMENT IS MAY BE A FALSE STATEMENT, BUT THE OTHER SIDE OF A PROFOUND STATEMENT IS ALWAYS ANOTHER PROFOUND STATEMENT.
Firstly i would like to state that belief is just an opinion or a
ReplyDeleteconviction.
The topic seems to have turned towards habits! Wearing vibhuthi, wearing
uniform to school are all definitely considered as habits but belief is not only related to
god or traditions. You may say that 'wearing vibhuthi' means 'belief in god'. But
that does not mean ppl who dont wear are all atheists.
According to me, belief is just a mental representation. For example, when i
was a kid i used to believe that clouds were all that bouncy, fluffy, cotton
like thing that floats high above the sky, until i came to know about the
real fact!
@ash: exactly what my point was.. it is NOT belief!!
ReplyDeleteI don't quite agree with the way the word belief is being used here. I'd rather refer it to as opinion because that is what Vinod has talked about in his blog.
ReplyDeleteOpinion is that which brings comfort to the mind.
If you think you are right, you may do something that someone else may think is wrong. There is no necessity to understand what the other person thinks because there is NO clear line saying what is right and what is wrong.
For instance, to any one us, committing a theft is something that is wrong.
To a serial killer, it is nothing because he commits murders and petty crimes are nothing next to it.
What is right and what i wrong is left for every individual to decide for himself, and that decision is his opinion.
Opinion is something that is relative; it changes from person to person. At best, Person-A can think from Person-B's point of view and if he wishes,he can CHANGE his opinion. You CANNOT think of having two opinions about the same thing unless you want to be a confused individual in life.
I'm not saying no two people can have the same opinions. They can. But not ALL of their opinions would match. This difference of opinion is not wrong because it is THIS difference that makes you the individual that you are.
why does it refer my name as juggernaut???
ReplyDeleteRahul..
@ash: no uniforms means we get punishment or rather everyday we need to distribute chocolates. no vibuthi may be not a atheist.. but yes vibhuthi, defly not a atheist, a believer100%... thats belief..
ReplyDeletethe cloud belief was respected by the people around u, thats the other side of belief.. even though u must have sounded stupid, the other side was respected...
@pre: refer above
@rahul: well said..
to all: we all say wat we believe in .. all of this somehow or the other revolves around the same topic... giving it different, other sides.
on the whole i believe tht believing in things we do on a daily basis gives more meaning to our lives,n respecting other's beliefs aids in better understandin of ppl n thereby our relationships with thm...
ReplyDeleteand as rahul says ,thrs always the question "where do you draw the line?",indicating whts right and whts wrong...
There are two things. Opinion and fact. Some opinions may change because of the process of comprehending and understanding. Like ash's opinion about the clouds changed upon knowing the truth. Opinion changes with the process of learning. At the same time, there are certain opinions that are not supported by fact. I guess that's what we refer to as belief. Say, the existence of god or following a religion is not based on fact but based on belief or opinion. Maybe our opinions will change if ever a time comes where we find out what the truth is. But till then everyone will have their own opinions or versions or beliefs, whatever you may wanna call it. As long as it doesn't harm you and the others around you, i would rate your opinion to be good. :)
ReplyDeletei ve no other comments.... except... good thread...:)
ReplyDeletehey an btw who is ash...? pls reveal urself...
ReplyDeletehey da,
ReplyDeletede thing is , i 2 have come across de 2 instant u shared. i do go with u... its not easy 2 feel wat others feel... most of de time i failed 2 respond r respect... but sometimes i succeeded... its really a hard thing... if a person says his/her view regardin a matter... human mind 1st compare with their own view... but v need go into de person's POSITION and think... and most of de misunderstandings and misperseption r coz of not givin inportance 2 other's feelings... and here u say it de BELIEF... cool...
